IN SHORT
2027 is shaping up to be a busy year across Australia's architecture, engineering, planning and broader built environment sectors.
With Olympic-related work continuing in Queensland, infrastructure projects moving ahead, Defence activity in South Australia and continued growth in data centres, businesses are already thinking about how they'll resource the work ahead.
If you know you'll need more people in 2027, October and November are a good time to get moving. December tends to be focused on wrapping up projects and the year, while waiting until January means starting the new year with a recruitment job still to do.
And if the right person isn't available locally, there are other options. Looking interstate, offering relocation or flexible working arrangements, or even considering a new office can open up a much larger talent pool.
Sometimes you need a whole team. Sometimes you just need one good person.
Either way, getting ahead of it now means you're in a better position to hit 2027 running.
DECEMBER IS NOT THE TIME TO START
Recruitment doesn't stop in December, but it certainly gets harder.
Projects are being pushed towards year-end deadlines. Teams are trying to finish the work they've already got. People are taking leave. Clients are winding down.
It's not exactly the ideal environment for starting a recruitment process from scratch.
October and November give you a bit more breathing room.
You can work out what you actually need, get the role to market, speak to the right people and have someone in place before the new year gets properly underway.
THE WORK ISN'T JUST IN ONE PLACE
One of the easiest ways to make a recruitment search unnecessarily difficult is to put too many limits around where your next hire needs to come from.
If the right person isn't in your city, that doesn't necessarily mean they're not available.
We've seen businesses look interstate to access talent, particularly when local talent pools are tight.
That might mean relocating someone for the right opportunity. It might mean a flexible working arrangement. It might even mean opening a new office in another state to support a growing pipeline.
If the work is there, it can be worth looking at where the people are too.
SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED ONE PERSON
Not every recruitment requirement is about building an entirely new team.
Sometimes it's one person.
The experienced architect who can pick up a project and get moving.
The engineer who has the right technical experience.
The planner who knows the approvals process inside out.
The graduate who can grow with the business.
That one person can make a noticeable difference when a team is already busy.
And if you know that person is missing now, there's not much benefit in waiting until January to start looking.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2027
There are plenty of moving parts across the market, and every business will have a different idea of what 2027 looks like.
For some, it's about keeping up with an existing pipeline.
For others, it's expansion.
For others, it's simply making sure the team is properly resourced before the next project lands.
The important thing is knowing what you need before you need it.
That's where we come in.
At Vivid Recruitment, we work across architecture, interior design, engineering, planning and pre-construction, connecting businesses with people across Australia.
We know the market. We know the people. And if the right person isn't sitting around the corner, we'll look further afield.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When should I start recruiting for 2027?
If you already know you'll need additional people in 2027, October and November are a sensible time to start. It gives you time to define the role, reach the right candidates and work through the recruitment process before the end-of-year slowdown.
Why is December a difficult time to recruit?
December is often focused on finishing projects, meeting end-of-year deadlines and taking annual leave. That can make it harder to get everyone involved in a recruitment process at the same time.
What if I can't find the right candidate locally?
Look further afield. Interstate recruitment can open up a much larger talent pool, particularly for specialist or experienced roles. Relocation and flexible working arrangements can also make opportunities more accessible to candidates outside your immediate market.
Should I consider opening an office in another state?
If your project pipeline and growth plans support it, expanding into another state can give you access to both new work and a different talent pool. It isn't the right solution for every business, but it's worth considering when local recruitment is consistently difficult.
What types of roles can Vivid Recruitment help with?
Vivid Recruitment specialises in architecture, interior design, engineering, planning and pre-construction recruitment across Australia.
Do I need to be hiring a whole team?
Not at all. Sometimes the requirement is simply one person to fill a gap in an existing team. Vivid can help with individual hires as well as larger recruitment requirements.
Is it too early to start recruiting for 2027?
If you already know the work is coming, it isn't too early to start planning. Recruitment takes time, particularly when you're looking for experienced or specialist talent.
