Redundancy - it's not a dirty word!
While I am seeing some positive signs in the market and everyone is hoping for projects to flow through for the rest of the year, it is still a fact that redundancies are possible. You might have already been made redundant or you might see the writing on the wall and you are preparing yourself.
Firstly, I have included the link to
Fair Work Australia which gives you loads of information about your rights and what to expect from a legal perspective. Definitely have a read of that.
Secondly, I thought I would share a few points about how to handle the unfortunate situation in the context of talking to potential employers and getting a new job.
- It is important to not take a redundancy too personally. I know it can feel like a sign that you have failed but rest assured there are many successful business leaders out there that were made redundant at some point in their careers. Just look at it as a commercial decision and a chance for you to move onwards and upwards.
- Make sure to highlight your achievements and successes during your time in the position. Whether it is on your CV or in an interview, use positive language and talk about your strengths. This will divert attention to how much of a win it will be for a new employer to get you on board.
- Don't speak negatively about your former company or employer. As much as you might be disappointed, as above try and focus on the positives and why you will be able to utilise your strengths in your next role. Nobody likes to be in an interview with someone complaining the whole time.
- Use this time to tidy up your CV and make it as polished and attractive as possible. Include all the projects you have worked on, or the teams you managed and the certifications or accreditations you obtained.
- Start networking and doing some research on prospective employers. Obviously I am biased and think using a recruiter will help you most, but it won't hurt to start having some coffees with friends at other companies. Get a feel for what you like and don't like in the industry as you might be surprised at how fast you are snapped up.
These are just a few tips that I have seen as helpful after a decade of recruitment. If you would like to chat about this further or you are looking for a new role, don't hesitate to get in touch.
