About the Role
Our client is a leading national engineering consultancy with an impressive pipeline of education, aviation, commercial, tertiary, and industrial projects across Australia. They’re seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (6+ years’ experience) to join their Melbourne office. You’ll spearhead mechanical building services design on medium-scale developments—driving innovation, mentoring a growing team, and ensuring the delivery of world‐class HVAC solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design from concept through to construction for major projects (e.g., university campuses, airport terminals, large commercial fit-outs, and industrial facilities).
  • Oversee detailed HVAC system design (chilled water, VRF, air‐handling units, ductwork)
  • Produce and review comprehensive design documentation: schematic layouts, detailed Revit MEP models, specifications, and advanced design calculations using IES VE, Tas, HAP, or similar tools.
  • Conduct and supervise site inspections to verify as‐built conditions, lead site‐based problem solving, and update designs in real time; liaise with contractors and subconsultants to resolve on‐site mechanical challenges.
  • Engage directly with clients: facilitate workshops, present mechanical design concepts, negotiate scope changes, and build long‐term relationships with key stakeholders such as developers, architects, and facility managers.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop mid‐ and junior‐level mechanical engineers and CAD technicians—establish QA/QC procedures, review their work for compliance with Australian Standards, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Champion innovation in energy efficiency and sustainability: perform energy modelling, recommend low‐carbon solutions (e.g., high‑efficiency chillers, demand‐control ventilation, thermal storage), and support NABERS, Green Star, or IS rating submissions.
  • Lead value‑engineering initiatives—identify cost‐effective, high‑performance mechanical solutions without compromising design integrity or regulatory compliance.
  • Manage project budgets, resource allocation, and schedules—coordinate with project managers and directors to ensure on‑time, on‑budget delivery of mechanical packages.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 6+ years of progressive mechanical building services consulting experience, with a track record leading projects
  • Deep understanding of Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3666, AS 1668, AS/NZS 1682, AS/NZS 3661, AS/NZS 3661.1−1974, etc.) related to HVAC, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, fire dampers, and energy efficiency.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) accreditation—or actively working toward—preferred.
  • Exceptional leadership skills: proven ability to manage a multidisciplinary mechanical team, mentor junior staff, and guide technical decision‑making.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills—comfortable presenting complex mechanical concepts to clients, stakeholders, and non‑technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize tasks under tight deadlines, and drive results in a fast‑paced consultancy environment.
  • Passion for sustainable design: hands‑on experience with energy modelling, lifecycle costing, renewable integration (e.g., solar hot water, heat recovery), and achieving Green Star/NABERS benchmarks.
  • Self‑motivated, proactive, and committed to continuous professional development and best‑practice sharing across the organisation.
What’s On Offer
  • Leadership Role : Influence mechanical design strategy, champion innovation, and mentor a growing team within a top‐tier national consultancy.
  • Flexible Work Arrangements : Hybrid model (office/remote) with a modern, centrally located Melbourne studio.
  • Professional Development : Generous training budget, funded CPEng support, postgraduate study leave, conference attendance, and specialized technical workshops.
  • Supportive Culture : Collaborative, entrepreneurial environment with a strong focus on well‑being, social events, and work–life balance.
  • Innovation Focus : Opportunity to drive low‑carbon, sustainable mechanical solutions and shape the company’s long‑term energy‑efficiency goals.
